Arsenal hero Merson: Tottenham bought like a club on way down

Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has questioned Tottenham's summer market work.

Merson wrote in the Daily Star: "Spurs have not started well this season and they needed players after selling Luka Modric. Andre Villas-Boas needs to know he's got their support.

"But this is where it gets tricky because they've been in for just about everybody who's out there. They've been throwing money around hoping it sticks.

"At one point this week they had £70m on the table for players. Once you take their wages into account you're probably looking at over £100m.

"I don't think they have that kind of money to spend. I wonder if some of it is to appease the fans who want to see action.

"It's going to be a bad year for them. They've started badly and they've got a manager there who will not get any time.

"He's come from Chelsea and the fans won't stand for it if they're not in the top four by Christmas. He's on dodgy ground.

"They will think: 'He wasn't good enough for Chelsea, why is he good enough for us?' It could be deja vu all over again.

"If he doesn't get them playing he could be out by Christmas. It's the fans who get you the sack and they're already booing him!"
