Arsenal great Keown wants Spurs stars Alli, Dier together for England

Martin Keown has urged Gareth Southgate to make a few alterations to his England starting XI this weekend.

The Three Lions take on Lithuania in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley on Sunday and the former Arsenal star has called for Tottenham Hotspur pair Dele Alli and Eric Dier to be played together in midfield.

West Bromwich Albion's Jake Livermore started in Wednesday's friendly loss to Germany but Keown feels the Spurs duo would be better suited against the Lithuanians.

“On Sunday Gareth Southgate should take out Jake Livermore and drop Dele Alli into midfield next to his Tottenham team-mate Eric Dier," he told the Daily Mail.

“Alli has the stamina to get up and down the pitch and can make late runs into the box. Moving him back would also allow Southgate to add Raheem Sterling to the front three.

“Sterling has been one of the most improved players for Manchester City this season and he brings cutting-edge pace to the attack."

He added: “At the moment England do not have enough options in central midfield for that to happen and Dier, in a holding role, was as impressive as any player on Wednesday.

“He was imposing in the air and competitive on the ground and is developing a real eye for a pass."
