Arsenal are closing on a January deal for Sporting CP midfielder William Carvalho.
The Sunday Express says the Gunners continue to be linked with a move for Real Madrid's Sami Khedira, but reports in Portugal suggest that Carvalho's versatility has won Arsene Wenger's affection.
He can play in either midfield or defence and therefore address two problem areas at once.
Carvalho - who reportedly has a £37m release clause in his contract - was speaking about his wish to make a move to England or Spain in the near future.
He said: "We all have ambitions and I hope one day to play in the best leagues in the world, the English or Spanish.
"It was not to be this summer, but if I continue to do my job as I have done so, it will certainly come sooner or later."
