The News of the World says Cole has leapt to the top of Arsenal's wanted list after they were given first option on the West Ham striker.

The Gunners made their move for Cole after doubts over Marouane Chamakh's switch from Bordeaux emerged.

The Moroccan hit-man has been a long-term Arsenal target but now they are ready to turn their attention to £12million-rated Cole.

West Ham's board are fully aware of Arsenal's interest and accept the 26-year-old may have to be sacrificed to bolster finances, especially if the Hammers are relegated.
