Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker could be out of Germany's European Championship campaign.

The Mirror says Mertesacker has gone back to his native Germany to see the specialist who previously reconstructed the ankle which was re-injured at Sunderland on Saturday.

He is awaiting a scan, which could effectively end his hopes of playing at Euro 2012.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger said: "Certainly in the next month he (Mertesacker) will not be with us.

"He had reconstruction of his ankle in Germany before he joined us, and the scan did not look too positive."
