Arsenal are believed to be showing interest in Werder Bremen defender Per Mertesacker.
The Gunners are looking to shore up their defence and with news that Sol Campbell is headed for Newcastle United, have shifted their focus to the Germany centre-half.
Mertesacker has two years left on his Bremen contract so Arsenal will need to pay about £10million for his services and it looks as though he has emerged as their number one target following Everton's resistance to sell Phil Jagielka.
