Arsenal chief scout Steve Rowley was in Germany on the weekend.
The Mirror says Gunners boss Arsene Wenger sent Rowley to watch recently-capped Freiburg defender Matthais Ginter in the Bundesliga this weekend.
The Gunners have been on the trail of 6ft 3in 20-year-old for months, but are now stepping up their interest ahead of a summer bid.
Ginter waltzed through Sunday's game as Freiburg thumped Eintracht Frankfurt 4-1.
