Arsenal have moved to open talks with Manchester United over a sensational deal for Wayne Rooney. The Mirror says Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis has made an approach to Manchester United and the Rooney camp was also sounded out this week.
United boss David Moyes is adamant that Rooney is not for sale.
But the striker remains unsettled and Arsenal are keen to see if a deal can be done.
Chelsea have already had bids turned down but Arsenal wonder whether United would prefer to sell to them - just a year after Robin van Persie went in the opposite direction.
Arsenal's England duo Jack Wilshere and Theo Walcott even joked with Rooney while on England duty this week that he should join them.
The Gunners are determined to land a big signing before the end of the window with the chances of a deal for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez fading.
