Arsenal, Chelsea step up Arshavin battle

Zenit manager Dick Advocaat claims a deal for Arshavin should be concluded this week and the playmaker's agent, Dennis Lachter, believes it is "most likely" he will end up in England, says the Daily Express.

Chelsea and Arsenal are interested in signing Arshavin but will need to better the £12million bid Zenit last night rejected from Barcelona.

Arsenal could make a firm move for Arshavin and decide to cash in on £12m-rated Alex Hleb, who has attacked Gunners boss Arsene Wenger and his team-mate Cesc Fabregas. Barcelona have a long-standing interest in Hleb.

Chelsea have looked at Arshavin but are waiting to hear whether England midfielder Frank Lampard wants to stay at Stamford Bridge.
