Arsenal cautious in transfer market due to Champions League doubts

It's been suggested Arsenal's cautious approach in the summer market is due to their need to navigate a Champions League qualifier.

The London Evening Standard says Arsenal remain in the transfer market for at least one centre-back and have identified Valencia's Juan Mata and Real Madrid starlet Jose Rodriguez as other possible targets.<> But Arsenal's relative inactivity could partly be explained by the uncertainty surrounding their involvement in the Champions League.

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis has insisted in the past that the club budget their finances based upon appearing in Europe's premier club competition in three out of every four seasons but defeat at the play-off stage would cost them at least £25m in lost revenue and may prompt a revision of their spending plans.
