Arsenal boss Wenger: Xhaka has to control his game

Arsene Wenger has implored Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka to become a more composed player.

The Swiss international was shown a straight red card by referee Jon Moss in the 65th minute of Sunday's eventual 2-1 win over Burnley at the Emirates.

Xhaka produced a lunging tackle on Steven Defour after losing the ball in midfield and although the jury is still out on whether it was a definite sending off or not, Wenger is aware that the summer arrival has to curb his enthusiasm in his tackling.

"Xhaka's red card? Honestly I have to look at it again," said Wenger after the gam.

"The noises I get is that it was a red card and he has to control his game and not punish the team with lack of control in his tackling.

"We don't encourage our midfielders to go down on tackles, we want them to stand up and not to make these kind of fouls.

"If it's a bad tackle, it's a red card. I'm disappointed that we played with 10 men, yes."

It was also the second time Xhaka has been given his marching orders by Moss this season after also receiving a red against Swansea City at home in October.

Wenger added: "We've had two red cards and four penalties [given against us] this season at home now. You cannot say that we make it easy for ourselves, or that we get it easy."
