Arsenal boss Wenger targets young centre-half signing

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is ready to push the boat out for a new centre-half signing.

The London Evening Standard says William Gallas seems set to depart which further exacerbates the need to sign at least one if not two centre-backs.

Sol Campbell has been outstanding and has fully earned another year but he can only be considered a back-up, while Mikael Silvestre is no longer capable of playing at the highest level.

Johan Djourou's return is welcome but he is yet to prove a consistent first-team performer. Neven Subotic, of Borussia Dortmund, is a long-term target, while Bolton's Gary Cahill and Senegalese centre-back Pape Diakhate are among the alternatives.
