Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has had a pop at Manchester City rival Mark Hughes over his support for Emmanuel Adebayor. Wenger took a swipe at Hughes for daring to defend his player after the stamp on Robin van Persie's head and the inflammatory celebration which followed the Adebayor goal in City's 4-2 win against Arsenal at Eastlands, last Saturday.
"It looks very bad," said Wenger, speaking for the first time since reviewing the incidents on tape. "You can ask 100 people, 99 will say it is very bad and the hundredth will be Mark Hughes."
Confessing he was shocked by the depth of Adebayor's ill-feeling towards his old club, Wenger added: "Emmanuel Adebayor deserves to be charged for what he did. I was surprised there was such animosity in his attitude towards Arsenal because, in a few years, he will realise Arsenal have been a very positive influence in his life. That is why I was deeply surprised and shocked.
"We are disappointed because when you go to the head, you are always scared for people. You never know how it will affect their health. You want to be protected.
"Whether this is Adebayor or anybody else, it was a very bad challenge, surprisingly bad. I didn't expect him to do that. The referee should also have sent him off for the tackle on Cesc Fabregas."
On Van Persie furious reaction after the game, Wenger added: "If somebody stamps on your head in that way, you wouldn't say 'thank you very much, would you like me to show you the other cheek?" Only Jesus Christ did that."
