Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was delighted with the performance of Calum Chambers in their Emirates Cup thrashing of Benfica.
Chambers only arrived from Southampton last week.
"I thought he played very well, was intelligent, good decision-making and calm on the ball, good in the air," Wenger told arsenal.com.
"He is 19 years old, and what he did is very promising. I told you we will have a core of English players, you have to trust me, I will get you slowly a good national team!"
Wenger also handed Alexis Sanchez a debut.
"He is not fit yet, but he has shown through some runs he will be very dangerous. He can play on the flanks and through the middle. [On Sunday] I will certainly play him on the flank for 45 minutes. He is not fit yet, but in one week he should be much better."
