Arsenal boss Wenger moves to beat Liverpool for Wigan youngster McCarthy

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is preparing a bid for Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy.

The Daily Mail says Wenger is understood to have made an enquiry about the 20-year-old earlier in the summer, but was told he was not for sale.

The Republic of Ireland international has been in impressive form since signing from Scottish side Hamilton Academical in 2009.

And now with the potential departures of midfielders Cesc Fabregas and Sami Nasri, Wenger is considering going back to Wigan with a bid for the midfielder.

Liverpool have been linked with the midfielder as well, but Wigan boss Roberto Martinez is keen to keep hold of the youngster, especially with the expected departure of Charles N'Zogbia to Aston Villa this week.
