Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says he was always had confidence in young left-back Kieran Gibbs thanks to his experience in the Carling Cup.

Gibbs impressed in victory over Villarreal last night and Wenger said: "That's where you see you are happy that you play these boys in the Carling Cup because they've played in games.

"For example when we played against Wigan on Saturday he had already played against [Antonio] Valencia in the Carling Cup."
