Arsenal boss Wenger fancies Man Utd pair Cleverley, Smalling in Vermaelen deal

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger may seek a swap deal in talks over the sale of Thomas Vermaelen to Manchester United. The Mirror says Wenger has been keeping tabs on Tom Cleverley and also has an interest in Chris Smalling.

That could act as a potential sweetener, with the Old Trafford giants keen to do a £10million deal for Belgium World Cup defender Vermaelen.

Vermaelen, 28, only has one year left on his contract with the Gunners, has been relegated down the pecking order and, despite being captain, seems surplus to requirements.
