Arsenal boss Wenger expecting Emirates Cup return for Welbeck

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is hopeful England striker Danny Welbeck will be available for the Emirates Cup pre-season tournament.

Welbeck suffered a knee injury at the end of last season, which kept him out of Arsenal's FA Cup triumph over Aston Villa.

The Gunners have managed the 24-year-old's recovery carefully and Wenger is confident Welbeck will be fit to participate in the tournament, which will also feature Lyon, Wolfsburg and Villareal.

"Welbeck's injury was at the start very minor. It's bone bruising but took much longer to settle than we expected. I expect him to play a part in the Emirates Cup at the end of the month," Wenger said.

"I also expect him to develop as a centralstrikerand a wide player. He played mostly wide last season, but if he adds goals as well he can be very effective as a central striker as well."
