Arsenal boss Wenger: Couple of weeks ago they said we'd be relegated

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is happy to have silenced their doubters after a string of wins.

Arsenal have been described as 'transformed' after stringing together a run of eight wins in nine games but Wenger believed in his team even before then.

"I was always very confident," he said. "I knew that football games lie in detail. We have seen that again on Saturday. It was a big win and it was a very tight game.

"People said the team would fight for relegation and now they say the team is unbeatable but we still have some progress to make. I am positive because I believe in the quality and I see as well among the players that there is a huge desire to focus to improve. We have good solidarity inside the squad so I was always optimistic.

"I believe that to come back into the title race we need much more consistency in our results before we can claim that. We are closer to the Champions League places. The next step is to come back closer to the top four of the league. It's our deep desire but we need some time to get back in a stronger position."
