Arsenal boss Unai Emery has explained his conversation with Jack Wilshere before his release.

The midfielder left the Gunners for West Ham last week.

"The conversation was a good conversation," said Emery.

"I explained to him my position and how I wanted the team to stand. I could not say for sure that he was in the first eleven. He told me that this decision was not easy for him and that he wanted to choose the best option for himself.

"It was respectful. I know this player is important to the fans. But I do not give him a permanent place.

"That's why he decided to leave and I respect that."
