Arsenal alerted as Man Utd set Smalling price

Manchester United have set their summer asking price for Chris Smalling, with Arsenal already preparing a bid.

The Daily Star says Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has a long-standing interest in the England centre-back, whose Old Trafford future has been in doubt for some time.

But United will use the recent valuation on their former central defender Jonny Evans as a guide to a fee for Smalling, 28.

Evans has a clause in his contract that he can leave for £3m if West Brom are relegated.

But the Baggies rejected a £10m offer from Arsenal in the last transfer window, which closed last month, because they believe the true valuation of Evans, 30, is nearer £25m.

Smalling is another option for the Gunners and it is understood that United would be open for business.
