Arsenal’s clash with Wigan Athletic in the Carling Cup quarter-final tonight will mark the return of striker Robin van Persie.

The Dutchman was dropped by Gunners boss Arsene Wenger after the side’s loss to Tottenham last weekend, forcing him out of the midweek Champions League fixture with Braga and Saturday’s win over Aston Villa.

van Persie was given extra time to get himself back into shape as he continues to battle with an ankle injury that has derailed his season and will now come back into the squad to take on the Latics at Emirates Stadium.

Wenger admitted that the Holland international will play but could not confirm whether he will start – something van Persie hasn’t done since August 28.

"Robin will certainly play, yes. But I haven't decided my starting line-up yet,” Wenger said.

"Robin can play on his own up front, he can play in behind, so I will have to think about that overnight in fairness. It would be wrong from my side to tell you what I want to do because I have not decided yet.”
