Appleton happy Long already off mark for West Brom

West Bromwich Albion coach Michael Appleton is happy Shane Long is already off the mark.

Roy Hodgson's No.2 was also delighted to see Long open his Albion account on his debut.

And admitted he has been impressed how the 24-year-old hitman has carried himself on and off the pitch since arriving at The Hawthorns last week.

"It's great from his point of view," Appleton told the WBA website.

"There is nothing better than a centre-forward getting off the mark on his debut. It came at a good time as well.

"We didn't start the game particularly well. Whether that was a little bit of trepidation because we were playing the champions on the opening day of the season - I'm not sure.

"I think we really grew into the game after that.

"It was an important time to get the goal and important Shane got the goal because it's got him up and running and hopefully he'll be flying for the rest of the season.

"From a confidence point of view - not that I think he needs it because he is a pretty confident chap - I'm sure that will do the whole team good."
