Appleton happy being Hodgson No2 at West Brom

Michael Appleton is enjoying his role as Roy Hodgson's No2 at West Bromwich Albion.

After being put in caretaker charge for the home game against West Ham in February, he has since been working as new head coach Hodgson's assistant.

It is a position he will keep on an interim basis until the end of season - and 'Appy' is enjoying the challenge.

"My role has changed a little bit, more from a responsibility point of view," he told the WBA website.

"I'm asked to do a lot more stuff behind the scenes in terms of dealing with the players, pre-match meetings, post-match meetings and doing the background on all the teams we play.

"The staff - Keith Downing, Dean Kiely and Jonny Gibson (team analyst), plus the gaffer at times - will sit down and watch the opposition on video.

"Jonny and I will then get a video together of their strengths and weaknesses and take the meeting with the players.

"A lot of the things I have done in the past have been on-field stuff on the training field, where as now I'm doing a lot more meetings etc.

"It's not something I've really done in the past but I've really enjoyed that side of things.

"It's brought another avenue to what I can do - and what I want to do in the future."
