Juan Pablo Angel became New York Red Bulls all-time leading goalscorer when he netted in the 1-1 draw with Chivas USA on the weekend. The Colombian star scored his 46th goal in all competitions for the Red Bulls, breaking Clint Mathis' previous record of 45.
What makes the achievement more remarkable is that the former River Plate and Aston Villa talisman did it in 32 less matches - 78 opposed to Mathis' 110.
"It's an honor to be part of the history of this franchise,'' Angel said.
Interim Red Bulls coach Richie Williams praised Angel after his record-breaking strike.
"It's well deserved,'' Williams said.
"Juan Pablo has been a great pro, a great player since he arrived here. He's been one of the best, if not the best, strikers in this league over the past three seasons. It's just a credit to him, his ability as a soccer player and his work ethic."
