Andy Gray: Why everyone at Everton surprised by instant Jelavic impact

Sharethematch.com ambassador Andy Gray was talking exclusively to tribalfootball.com…

Nikica Jelavic is yet another quality January signing from David Moyes but just how well he and Everton have done has surprised me.

I spoke with Alan Stubbs, who is now coaching at Everton, the other day and he couldn't have spoken more positively about the Moyes' latest signing.

Stubbsy said they knew they were getting a good player when they paid Glasgow Rangers the fee for him and they were excited about his talent.

But Alan did say that all the coaching staff at Everton had been hugely surprised with just how much quality the boy has and how quickly he has settled into the Premier League.

They really think they've got a serious player and Stubbsy said they believe he is one of the best finishers they have seen at the club in a long time.

I think that tells you everything you need to know about Nikica Jelavic and just how well he has done - Everton are very happy with the work he has done so far for them.

Personally I knew a bit about Jelavic before he came to England because of his time playing with Rangers and the one thing I knew for certain about him was that he was a finisher.

In the games I watched him in the SPL if he got a chance he was an excellent finisher and could be absolutely lethal on his day.

The one thing I wasn't so sure about was if his pace would be up to the standard required in the Premier League and if he could cope with the speed the game is played at south of the border.

But it has not been an issue for him and he has settled so quickly it has been quite remarkable and you can see they already love him at Everton.

I would like to think it was another quality bit of business from David Moyes in the January transfer market which he seems to have made his own.

After how well Landon Donovan did after David secured him short-term in 2010 David has used the January transfer window to full effect in recent seasons and often gives his team the boost they need.

But I think this year David has done his best work so far and it seems all of his men he has brought in have settled and already contributed.

Donovan has slotted right back in again like he never left in the first place and has bolstered the Everton front line along with Jelavic.

We have seen Darron Gibson come in and score an important winner against Manchester City and Steven Pienaar especially has looked a different player since joining Everton.

David did a particularly good job in January this year and once again has given their season a real boost.
