DESPITE leading the Premier League I think Manchester United still have a lot of work to do if they are to maintain their title challenge right through to May.
It's the same with both Manchester clubs, neither has played five or six games at their very best yet but they still have clear daylight between themselves and the rest of the league.
Ferguson needs to do two things - organise his defence better, they've only had two clean sheets this season, which is very unlike United, and scoring goals from more areas of the pitch.
If they can do those things then they will be fine, every year it is the same with United - they are going to be contenders it's just a case of when they hit their stride.
Is it maybe an example of the standard of the Premier League dropping? I don't know. I hope not, but both have been vulnerable this season and yet here we are United top and City unbeaten so they're certainly showing other teams how get the job done when you're not playing well.
United's problem is going to be finding someone else to score goals.
Arsenal were criticised last year as being a one man team with RVP scoring all the goal - I would argue the same applies to United with the Dutchman at the moment.
Well when you look at their scoring charts RVP has nine league goals, Rooney has two and Welbeck has one, and while Hernandez does score more he doesn't start every game.
There's a problem with them in that extent of finding someone else who can score enough goals and I think Sir Alex would like to see more goals from Rooney and Welbeck - they can't rely on RVP all season.
The pressure on Rooney has been lessened slightly now he's got a goalscoring talent alongside him but he can't allow himself to lose his form at all, he has been far from his best and Ferguson will be expecting to see him back to his best soon.
Van Persie has been very good at Old Trafford so far, he's done exactly what Sir Alex Ferguson brought him there for and I expect more of the same. It's good to see him finally at a club where he will probably win some of the trophies his talent deserves.
As long as United have him up front it's a bonus, but they can't allow themselves to become too reliant on him.
There's a huge pressure on RVP at the moment if he doesn't score and Hernandez doesn't come off the bench to score - you can't win a title like that.
The one person who will know that more than anybody will be Ferguson and if there's any man who get his other players firing on all cylinders again then it is him.
In previous seasons Ferguson's sides have always found goals from all over the pitch and that needs to start happening again this year for their title chances.
If you look at the talent City have at their disposal, and the amount of different players they have scoring, it's a clear disadvantage at the moment and that could be the key difference come the business-end of the season.
