Ameobi says Newcastle spirit "sky high"

Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi says confidence around the club is "sky high" going into 2014.

Newcastle's points tally of 33 is their best haul at the halfway stage of the season since Sir Bobby Robson led his hometown club into the Champions League.

Nigerian international Ameobi said: "We're going into 2014 thinking we can achieve something special.

"That's pretty incredible when you look at where we were 12 months ago.

"The two seasons are poles apart. Where we are right now as a squad is completely different to back then.

"Confidence is sky-high and that's probably reflected in the fact we were so disappointed not to get something out of the Arsenal game.

"We felt we could beat them, which just goes to show how far we've come."
