Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi is determined to shine tonight at Maritimo.

Ameobi is also anxious to put down a marker for a starting role in the Premier League, amid the controversy about Ba's claims that he wants to play in every game.

He told the Mirror: "I have to prove myself every time I get the chance, like Demba Ba did the other night (with two goals as sub against Everton). He was dropped but he came on and showed his character and he really helped the team.

"I have to show the manager I am fit and ready to go and willing to fight for my place. The manager will reward those who do well.

"The manager can only pick a good team when all the players are bang on form. If they are all doing well and scoring goals it gives the manager a good headache."
