Ameobi battling for Newcastle stay

Shola Ameobi believes it is make-or-break for him at Newcastle United in the weeks leading up to the January market.

Although both Middlesbrough and Norwich City are monitoring Ameobi's situation closely, the former England Under-21 international wants to fight for his place.

The striker told the Evening Chronicle: "I don't know what the situation is at the moment. I won't speculate or assume or anything. Like any player, I have always said if I can't play here I will have to move on and nothing is different.

"But six weeks is a long time in football. We will see what happens.

"I am desperate to be in there and desperate to play. It isn't my decision. I have to work hard and make sure I stay fit.

"Playing in the reserves is a big help to me and playing games is good."
