Allsopp firmly in sights of Melbourne Victory

Melbourne Victory coach Ernie Merrick has confirmed that the A-League club will hold talks with Danny Allsopp about a return. The 32-year old spent the 2010 season in America's MLS (Major League Soccer) with DC United after a short stint with Qatari outfit Al Rayyan.

Prior to that, however, Allsopp was a Victory star striker, scoring at will as he helped the club take out two A-League Championships.

There has been plenty of speculation about a Victory return for Allsopp, especially as the club is struggling to regularly find the back of the net, and now Merrick has said that signing the player is a definite possibility.

''I always keep in touch with overseas players, especially Danny, who has been a great servant to Melbourne Victory in the past. He's having a break and will make a decision on what he wants to do later,'' Merrick said.

''He plays a style of football we like and he is someone we will talk to. I am not clear yet whether he has definitely decided to come back to the A-League and Gary Cole [football operations manager] would have to look at the salary cap and a range of other things. We would love to have him back, but all I have said is that I can't do anything about that until January.

''I think we have got the players to do what we need, but I have never said I would not like Danny Allsopp.

"He's got to decide what he wants to do [although] I think the team I have got now is good enough to be in the finals."

Allsopp was released from his DC United contract despite scoring the equal most amount of goals (five) for the Washington club, who ended up with the worst record in MLS in 2010.
