Massimiliano Allegri has been named as new coach of Cagliari.
The Sardinians made a miraculous escape from the drop zone last term under the guidance of Davide Ballardini, who left after failing to agree terms over a new deal with president Massimo Cellino.
"I would never have imagined that I would appoint one of my former players as Coach, but it's a great pleasure," Cellino grinned. "I chose him because he has done well over the last few years. He won the League last year and it's always good to appoint a winning tactician. I can see that he is full of desire and enthusiasm."
Allegri is looking forward to the challenge of the Stadio Sant'Elia and believes that he is ready to succeed.
"I grew here a lot as a player, even if things didn't go that well because of an ankle injury," he recalled. "But after five years as a Coach, I couldn't ask for any more than a Serie A bench.
"My models? Giovanni Galeone, Oscar Tabarez and Giovanni Trapattoni, to name but a few.
"Am I scared? When he heard that I was coming to Cagliari, Galeone told me that people who are afraid don't go to war.
"I believe that we all have to set goals and give everything we have to try and achieve them.
"I think that there are quality players here who can make this team win and they have demonstrated that."
