Allardyce puzzled by West Ham link for Bolton's Davies

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce is pessimistic over landing Huddersfield striker Jordan Rhodes this month. The Championship outfit have had a bid for the 27-goal striker, believed to be around £3million, rejected by the League One promotion hopefuls.

"That's something we have tried to do but it's not a situation where it looks like Huddersfield want to lose their player," he said.

"When a club of Huddersfield's status decide they don't want to lose him because of their own position, and it's more important they keep him for their promotion push, then it becomes very difficult for us to prize the player away by the club giving us permission to speak to him.

"At the moment I would say yes, we have given up on that."

Allardyce also denied reports linking him with Bolton striker Kevin Davies, adding: "There is nothing in that as far as I'm concerned, I haven't spoken to (Bolton boss) Owen Coyle and at the moment I don't know anything about that scenario."
