All but done: Barcelona ace Henry to join New York Red Bull

New York Red Bull are on the brink of landing Barcelona star Thierry Henry. The Telegraph says the former Arsenal striker, whose Barcelona contract finishes in 2011, has held talks with the MLS franchise and flew to New York in January to discuss a possible summer move.

The 32-year-old could either join his new team-mates after the World Cup - four months into the MLS season - or become New York's Designated Player for the start of the 2011 season next March.

Dietmar Beiersdorfer, the franchise's sporting director, said: "We are looking for the one other player to reinforce our squad from time to time.

"I think this New York has a lot of big clubs, not in soccer, but in other sports. For sure we are looking forward also to developing our club here in New York and to be a big part of the sports scene in New York."

The Red Bull's current DP is Juan Pablo Angel, who joined the club in 2007. Angel, whose contract expires in 2011, said recently: "If you give me the choice to bring anyone I would stick with Thierry Henry. It would be phenomenal to have, not just in New York but also in this league."
