Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy returns to training next week.

The Daily Star says McCarthy, 23, was expected to be out for the rest of the season after surgery on a shoulder injury he picked up in November.

But he has made rapid progress during his rehabilitation and been cleared to step up his recovery next week.

McCarthy has been declared fit enough to start light training and ball work again, which could see a comeback well ahead of schedule.
