Alderweireld delighted to be back in action for Spurs

Toby Alderweireld returned for Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night.

The Belgian defender has been sidelined for the past two months with a nerve problem in his knee but was back on the pitch after coming on as a second-half sub in Wednesday night's 3-1 Champions League win over CSKA Moscow.

"I'm very happy," he told Spurs TV.

"It was a tough two months because it is not a usual injury

"I had to wait for my muscle and my nerve to start working again. The moment the nerve was working again and my muscle as well, then I could be fit and playing again.

"I put a lot of effort in so I'm happy to be back today."

Regarding his time spent on the sidelines, and in the gym rehabilitating, Alderweireld admitted it was tough to see his teammates playing so many key fixtures but was delighted to help the team back to winning ways at Wembley.

"It was difficult to see them play Champions League and in the (Premier) League as well, big games," he added.

"You want to try and help the team but it gave me one more reason to work hard and come back as quickly as possible.

"When you are injured it spurs you, you have to work very hard. It's a good thing because when you are back you are fit.

"I will try to help the team in the next few weeks.

"It was important to win in Europe and to win at Wembley was also important."

Spurs will now drop into the Europa League after finishing third in Group E.
