Everton boss Roberto Martinez hopes to sign released Wigan Athletic defender Antolin Alcaraz next week.

The Liverpool Echo says the Paraguay international returns to England next week after which negotiations over a proposed two-year contract are hoped to be finalised.

The 30-year-old defender is a free agent and ready to work with Martinez for a third successive season following their time together at Wigan Athletic, despite interest from Malaga and Werder Bremen.
