Aguirre refuses to take Atletico Madrid contract for granted

Atletico Madrid coach Javier Aguirre refuses to take his future with the club for granted, despite securing Champions League qualification with victory over Deportivo La Coruna last night.

Aguirre's current contract carries a clause that entitles him to another 12 months if Atletico finish in the top four, but the Mexican insists: "I have one more match in Valencia and I think I won't speak about my future until the end of the Liga.

"I was hired to get the team into the top four and we've achieved that. I feel relaxed and grateful to many people, starting with the club, the players, my staff, people who had faith in me, my family ..."

Atletico president Enrique Cerezo later stated: "(Aguirre) He's a great coach and a great person. I will neither confirm nor deny that we will renew his contract. I'll just say that there is a clause and we honour our contracts."
