Newcastle United were almost beaten by Genoa for their new Brazilian defender Claudio Cacapa, it has been revealed.

The Brazilian's agent, Federic Guerra, told Tutto Mercato Web: "He was all ready to join Genoa, but then at the last minute someone from France called and told them that Claudio was a victim of persistent injuries and the deal was off.

"So we were able to get him to Newcastle instead. He'll be a regular there and will prove his worth."
