AEG boss Leiweke wants DP for Houston Dynamo

Tim Leiweke, the president of Anschutz Entertainment Group, the majority owner of MLS club Houston Dynamo, wants to sign a Designated Player.

Leiweke has asked Dynamo head coach Dom Kinnear and chief Chris Canetti to being their search for a big-name player they can sign in either January or next summer.

MLS has experienced a recent influx of DPs and Leiweke says it is important for the Dynamo to be included in that aspect of the game.

"It has to be a dramatic player that has a huge impact on winning games and gives us a competitive edge here," Leiweke said. "They are hard to find. A lot of mistakes may be made if you don't find the right player, and it's probably a player that doesn't come in the January window.

"Chances are he will be from the Hispanic community because that is the future of our league," Leiweke added.

Leiweke said the impact players like Thierry Henry and Rafael Marquez had made at New York Red Bull was something to envy and was of firm belief that the Dynamo had to take the same path to improve themselves both on and off the pitch.

"From a business standpoint, the only thing I've asked Chris and Dom to do is don't dip your toe in the water," Leiweke added further. "If you are going (to do something), go big. I don't believe in half-way, and there is a commitment among all our partners to make it a significant player that moves the needle from a business standpoint, fan standpoint, as well as on the pitch.

"We've seen the impact in New York with Henry and Marquez. I think the Dynamo fans deserve that and have a right to expect that. This is the fourth largest city in the United States and it may be the best market in Major League Soccer."
