German sportswear manufacturers Adidas have defended the design of the women's version of Manchester United's new home kit, reports the London Evening Standard.
The strip sparked outrage from some fans on social media due to its plunging neckline after it was launched last week.
An Adidas spokesman has revealed that the strip was developed after close consultation with supporters, the majority of whom backed the design, which also features a different pattern on the collar to the men's version.
"Adidas provides an adult shirt which is a replica of what the players wear," the statement read.
"Based on research from fans, we also offer a women's shirt as part of our lifestyle range of products. This range has a slightly different design and fit to give fans a choice."
