Adelaide United's Barbiero to miss remainder of season

Adelaide United's Fabian Barbiero has succumbed to an ongoing ankle injury and will miss the rest of the A-League season.

The 26-year old underwent surgery on Tuesday to repair damaged ligaments he has been dealing with since the start of the season and will be out for around six weeks.

Barbiero aggravated the injury at training last week and was gutted at the fact he will miss the finals series with the third-placed Reds but now has his sights on next season.

"When it twisted again I felt a sharp pain in the same spot, but I didn't know until later that night and then the next morning how bad it was," Barbiero said.

"It is shattering, obviously with the finals coming up we're in a good position, the team has been doing well and I was hoping to be part of it.

"Now knowing I won't be part of it is disappointing, but that's football sometimes and I've got to think long term and be ready for next season."
