Adelaide's Fyfe has red card rescinded

Adelaide United defender Iain Fyfe has had his red card from Tuesday night's Round 19 loss to Perth Glory rescinded.

Fyfe was sent off for a challenge on Glory striker Mile Sterjovski outside the area which referee Ben Williams deemed as preventing a clear goalscoring opportunity and consequently, the Reds gave up a two-goal lead and were eventually hauled in by Perth who won 3-2.

'The independent Match Review Panel (MRP) consisting of Barry Such (Chair), Simon Micallef and Alan Davidson convened to consider the incident that saw referee Ben Williams send Fyfe off in the 61st minute of the match between the Reds and Perth for 'denying the opposing team a clear goal-scoring opportunity'.

'But following an Obvious Error Application by the Adelaide defender, the MRP considered and then upheld the application, which means the red card is expunged from Fyfe's record and he is not required to serve a sanction.'

Although the red card has been cancelled, it doesn't do much for the fact that Adelaide lost a vital match due to a key defender being sent from the pitch.

Fyfe will now be free to take on the Melbourne Victory at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.
