Adams: I couldn't keep Defoe at Portsmouth

Portsmouth boss Tony Adams has no regrets selling Jermain Defoe to Tottenham.

Ahead of tomorrow's big match, Adams said: "I've got nothing against Jermain but this club is too small to have individuals who don't want to be here.

"He's a fantastic player and a great goalscorer. But he wanted to go back to North London and what he saw as his club. As for Harry, I've nothing but the utmost respect for the man. I'm certainly not going to start slagging him off.

"He gave me a great opportunity when he brought me to Portsmouth as a coach and we had an enormous amount of fun in our 2½ years together. We became good friends during that time but I wasn't too surprised when he left for Tottenham.

"But there are a lot of players who will be looking to beat Harry."
