AC Milan's Onyewu injures knee on international duty

AC Milan defender Oguchi Onyewu was injured whilst on international duty with USA on Wednesday. The 27-year old landed awkwardly in the 2-2 World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica, injuring his knee and although the extent of the injury is still unknown, is facing a lengthy stint on the sidelines.

"It is a big blow for me. I am devastated," he told skysports.com.

"After a jump, I did not feel my knee. I knew straight away that I was badly injured.

"But that is life. Hopefully, I will come back soon."

Although Onyewu was optimistic, Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani was fuming after the injury was confirmed.

"I'm very angry because once again the national teams take our players and we have to pay the consequences of injuries," Galliani is quoted as saying by Italian media.

"We demand compensation from the American Federation because we cannot pay the salary of a player who cannot play for six months."
