AC Milan and Juventus are stepping up their push for Aston Villa defender Olof Mellberg.

The Mirror says the Sweden defender is out of contract at the end of the season but talks on a new deal are on hold and he is free to speak to foreign clubs from January.

Boss Martin O'Neill said: "I've spoken to Olof but we've decided to leave things for a while."
