AC Milan have confirmed goalkeeper Christian Abbiati is joining Atletico Madrid on a season-long loan.

Abbiati spent last season with Torino, but negotiations to extend his stay with the Granata stalled after Urbano Cairo asked him to lower his salary demands to £535,000.

"Milan announce the temporary transfer of footballer Christian Abbiati to Atletico Madrid until June 30, 2008," read a statement on the Rossoneri website.

The Via Turati outfit had declared that they were open to a loan deal if the 30-year-old opted to stay in Turin, but Los Colchoneros' reported £1m-per-season offer convinced him to move on to pastures new.
