AC Milan coach Gattuso: Who am I to criticise Buffon? I was much worse!

AC Milan coach Rino Gattuso refused to criticise Juventus captain Gigi Buffon after his furious blast for English ref Michael Oliver.

Buffon slammed Oliver after Juve's Champions League elimination at Real Madrid last week.

“I am frankly the last person who can talk about the way others react," Gattuso said yesterday

“I did much worse than that, because when the vein gets blocked up, you don't know what's going on. I nearly headbutted Joe Jordan, I went into the stands to insult Leonardo… I just can't talk.

“Gigi remains a great teammate and a great champion. When he feels ready, I think he will apologise. I felt sad for Juventus, but proud of Italian football.

“When I stepped on to the field, I was ready to do battle even against my own father if it meant victory for my team. I say it was my evil twin Rino who was on the pitch and to be honest that hasn't changed.

“I still feel embarrassed when I watch back footage of what I've done, especially now my son can see them on the Internet.

“Having said that, I can't understand why there is no VAR in the Champions League. What are referees for behind the line when you can put them in a room in front of a video replay? There is so much revolving around the Champions League, so many interests, it's unthinkable there's no VAR."
