Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien is in Italy ahead of a proposed free transfer to AC Milan.

The 31-year old Ghanaian is poised to leave Stamford Bridge this winter after finding regular game time hard to come by under Jose Mourinho and it appears as though his next move will be the Serie A.

Rossoneri boss Clarence Seedorf is keen on either a loan or permanent deal for Essien who is expected in Milan on Friday night.

A statement on read: "Michael Essien in expected in the city this evening."

Essien, who spent last season on loan at Real Madrid, joined Chelsea from Lyon for £24.4million in 2005 and has gone on to make more than 250 appearances in all competitions.
