AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani insists they never made a serious effort to sign Roma captain Francesco Totti.
Last week, Totti revealed he came close to signing for a Serie A rival several years ago.
But Galliani says: "Totti had the chance to come here as a boy, but it is right that he continued to play for Roma.
"You do not buy the great symbols and it is right that he continued to play there, as we did with Paolo Maldini."
